The Calliope hummingbird is the smallest bird in North America, yet carries a joyful energy that belies its tiny frame. The male's throat is adorned with rays of vivid magenta streaking outward like the petals of a wildflower, unlike anything else in the bird world. Despite being so small, it makes one of the longest migrations of any hummingbird, traveling thousands of miles between mountain meadows and tropical wintering grounds, a reminder that great things can come in the most delicate of packages.
